Two River Theater 2023-24 season

Two River Theater in Red Bank has announced its 2023-24 season.

The rock musical “Hair” and August Wilson’s “Gem of the Ocean” will be among the offerings of the 2023-’24 season of Two River Theater in Red Bank, as will world premieres of plays by Tony Meneses and Kate Hamill, and a family-oriented “A Little Shakespeare” production of the comedy “Love’s Labour’s Lost.”

This will be the theater’s 30th season, and its first to be programmed by new artistic director Justin Waldman and managing director Nora DeVeau-Rosen.

Husband-and-wife actors Crystal A. Dickinson and Brandon J. Dirden, who have appeared in many past Two River productions, will perform in “Gem of the Ocean.” This will be part of a multi-year Two River project in which it will produce all 10 plays in Wilson’s “American Century Cycle,” featuring plays set in all 10 decades of the 20th century. “Gem of the Ocean” will be the seventh in the Two River series, though, since it is set in 1904, it is the first in Wilson’s Cycle, chronologically (it is the ninth in the order that he wrote them, having premiered in 2003).

Here is the season. All shows will take place in Two River Theater’s 350-seat Joan and Robert Rechnitz Theater except for “A Thousand Maids” and “Love’s Labour’s Lost,” which will be produced in the 99-capacity Marion Huber Theater.

Sept. 30-Oct. 22: “Hair,” book and lyrics by Gerome Ragni and James Rado; music by Galt MacDermot; directed by James Vásquez; original choreography by Matye Natalio.

Feb. 3-25: “The Scarlet Letter,” by Kate Hamill; based on the novel by Nathaniel Hawthorne; directed by Shelley Butler.

March 1-10: “A Little Shakespeare: Love’s Labour’s Lost,” by William Shakespeare; adapted and directed by Tai Thompson.

April 6-28: “A Thousand Maids,” by Tony Meneses; directed by May Adrales.

June 8-20, 2024: “Gem of the Ocean,” by August Wilson, directed by Delicia Turner Sonnenberg.
