Kicking off a new leg of his 2023 tour with the E Street Band at Wrigley Field in Chicago, Aug. 9, Bruce Springsteen dedicated the show-closing “I’ll See You in My Dreams” to Robbie Robertson of The Band, who had died earlier in the day.

Many E Streeters have talked about The Band’s influence on them and members of the two groups have played together at various times over the years. Springsteen and the E Street Band performed The Band’s “The Weight” live in 2012 in tribute to The Band’s Levon Helm, who had died that year, and in 1993, The Band (without Robertson, who had stopped performing with them, and Richard Manuel, who died in 1986) recorded Springsteen’s “Atlantic City.”

After Robertson died, Steven Van Zandt posted on social media that he was “A good friend and a genius. The Band’s music shocked the excess out of the Renaissance and were an essential part of the final back-to-the-roots trend of ’60s. He was an underrated brilliant guitar player adding greatly to Bob Dylan’s best tour and best album.”

The first edition of Ringo Starr’s All-Starr Band, in 1989, featured The Band members Helm and Rick Danko and E Streeters Clarence Clemons and Nils Lofgren, among others. Here they are performing The Band’s “The Weight” and “Up on Cripple Creek.”

Springsteen, Robertson, Roy Bittan and others back John Fogerty on “Who’ll Stop the Rain,” “Green River” and “Born on the Bayou” when Fogerty was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as a member of Creedence Clearwater Revival, at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles on Jan. 12, 1993.

The Band — featuring original members Helm, Danko and Garth Hudson — recorded Springsteen’s “Atlantic City” for their 1993 album, Jericho. Here they are performing it at the Woodstock ’94 concert in Saugerties, New York.

Max Weinberg and Garry Tallent — along with the group The Delevantes — back Helm on the Band song “Rag Mama Rag” on Sept. 21, 1997, at a concert at Severance Hall in Cleveland honoring the iconic country singer Jimmie Rodgers.

Springsteen, Robertson, Bittan, Lofgren and Weinberg participate in all-star versions of “People Get Ready” and “Let It Be” at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York on March 15, 1999. Springsteen had been inducted that night.

Springsteen and the E Street Band perform “The Weight” in tribute to Helm at the Prudential Center in Newark on May 2, 2012. Helm had died on April 19 of that year.
