The Weeklings salute The Rolling Stones’ Brian Jones in their new single.
The Weeklings pay tribute to Brian Jones — the original Rolling Stones member who died in 1969, at the age of 27 — in their new song, “Brian Jones,” which is being released today. You can watch the video below.
It’s a bluesy song with a slinky beat, and includes references to the Rolling Stones songs “Mother’s Little Helper” and “The Last Time,” as well as the myth of blues pioneer Robert Johnson selling his soul at a crossroads.
The Weeklings have previously shown more interest in the Stones’ rivals, The Beatles. Zeek Weekling (Bob Burger) came up with the idea for “Brian Jones” and co-wrote it with Lefty Weekling (Glen Burtnik).
“The Rolling Stones are really another component of The Weeklings DNA!,” said Zeek Weekling, in a press release. “We think that Brian Jones was a little bit of an unsung hero. He founded the band, and helped kickstart the British blues scene that launched so many huge careers. We are both celebrating the genius of Brian Jones, and lamenting his tragedy. With a beat of course …”
The video was directed by Cecil B. DeWeekling (Mark Laidlaw) and filmed at the Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel in Asbury Park.
Coincidentally, The Rolling Stones themselves are nearing the Oct. 20 release date of Hackney Diamonds, their first studio album of new material since 2005.
The Weeklings — who also include guitarist Rocky Weekling (John Merjave) and drummer Smokestack Weekling (Joe Bellia)— are planning to release a new album in January. Their upcoming shows include the South Orange Performing Arts Center, Oct. 13; and the Lizzie Rose Music Room in Tuckerton, Nov. 3.
