Olympia Dukakis, Dane Dehaan Q&A’s among late additions to Montclair Film Fest

There are some last-minute additions — including conversations and Q&A sessions with Olympia Dukakis, Dane Dehaan and David Gordon Green — to the Montclair Film Festival, which begins on Friday and ends May 10.

Dukakis, an Oscar-winning actress as well as a former Montclair resident, will participate in a May 3 Q&A for her comedy-drama “7 Chinese Brothers,” which will screen that day at 12:45 p.m. at the Bellevue Theater.

Dane Dehaan, who has acted in “In Treatment,” “The Amazing Spiderman 2” and “Kill Your Darlings,” will join Patrick Wilson or the festival’s annual Patrick Wilson & Friends conversation May 3 at 1 p.m. at the Montclair Art Museum.

Green, who has directed “Pineapple Express,” “Price Avalanche” and other movies, will participate in a Q&A for his drama “Manglehorn,” which stars Al Pacino, and will screen at 6:45 p.m. May 9 at the Bellevue Theater.

Also, the festival has announced several new educational programs and events, all free for participating student and families.:

The festival’s Junior Jury, featuring 14 students from 10 area high schools, will see films, deliberate and present the MFF Junior Jury Award at the festival’s first awards ceremony, May 9 at 6:30 p.m. at the Montclair Kimberley Academy Upper School.

The jurors are: Michael Bogaards (Glen Ridge High School), Emerald Bosque (Passaic County Technical Institute), Bridget Cunningham (West Orange High School), Mitchell Folan (Parsippany High School), Isaiah Garlin (St. Peter’s Prep), Jaime Greene (Barnstable Academy), Will Jacobson (Montclair High School), Anissa Matthews (Montclair High School), Jonathan William Ollom (Summit High School), Nate Perlmeter (Montclair High School), Simone Rembert (Montclair High School), Sebastian Rodriguez-Vars (Montclair High School), Brendan Weissman (Millburn High School) and Jeremy White (Bloomfield High School).

The festival will present sensory friendly screenings, for students and their relatives, of “How to Dance in Ohio” (for middle and high school students) and “The Boy and the World” (for all ages).

The festival will launch its free student screening program with Montclair High School’s Center for Social Justice, which will bring more than 100 students to a screening of “Peace Officer,” a documentary about the increased militarization of the police in the United States.

The Montclair High School film club, Imani, and other groups will attend a free screening of “Top Spin,” as well as a Q&A with director Sara Newans.

A second screening of Kidz Shortz — prize-winning short films by young filmmakers — has been added to the program, May 2 at 10:30 a.m. at the Bellevue Theater, with an free afterparty to be held on the lawn of St. James Church, at 581 Valley Road, at 12:30 p.m.
