This month marks the 120th anniversary of the birth of jazz icon Count Basie — the Kid from Red Bank, born in that city on Aug. 21, 1904. And in honor of that, singer Deborah Silver will perform songs from her upcoming album Basie Rocks!, and other material, at The Loft at City Winery in New York, Aug. 13 at 7:30 p.m. Visit citywinery.com.
She will be performing with her quartet. But Basie Rocks!, which was produced by Rolling Stones drummer Steve Jordan, is a collaboration with The Count Basie Orchestra — winner of the 2024 Grammy for Best Large Jazz Ensemble for their album Basie Swings the Blues — and guests including Trombone Shorty, Arturo Sandoval, Bill Frisell and Kurt Elling.
Basie Rocks! includes big band versions of songs such as The Rolling Stones’ “Paint it Black” (featuring Sandoval on trumpet), Peter Frampton’s “Baby, I Love Your Way,” Paul McCartney & Wings’ “Band on the Run,” Soft Cell’s “Tainted Love,” Elton John’s “Bennie and the Jets” and The Police’s “Every Breath You Take.” Its release date is TBA.
