This year’s TD Jazz Series at NJPAC in Newark will include a “Tribute to Funk,” Nov. 14, with an all-star lineup including funk visionary George Clinton (of Parliament-Funkadelic fame), R&B singer-songwriter Bilal, Labelle member and solo artist Nona Hendryx, tap-dance master Savion Glover (who choreographed and starred in the Broadway show “Bring in ‘da Noise, Bring in ‘da Funk”), jazz bassist Christian McBride and guitar hero Vernon Reid (of Living Colour), with Ray Chew (of “Dancing With the Stars” and “Showtime at the Apollo”) serving as music director.
The show will be in NJPAC’s Prudential Hall. Tickets go on sale Aug. 23 at 10 a.m., with pre-sales beginning Aug. 21 at 10 a.m. Visit ticketmaster.com.
McBride, who is NJPAC’s jazz advisor, has called funk legend James Brown his “No. 1 musical hero” and organized, in 2016, a Brown tribute at NJPAC that featured Hendryx, Bettye LaVette, Lee Fields and longtime members of Brown’s backing band.
