Stevie Van Zandt made a surprise appearance at The Roxy in Los Angeles, Dec. 5, guesting with occasional E Street Band member Tom Morello on a ferocious version of MC5’s ’60s anthem “Kick Out the Jams.” You can listen to it below.

Morello, a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer as a member of Rage Against the Machine as well as a veteran solo artist, has played with The E Street Band occasionally since 2008 — most extensively, when Van Zandt was unable to participate in the 2013 Australian leg of the Wrecking Ball Tour, and he filled in.

“Kick Out the Jams” was only a minor hit when it was released as a single in 1969, but has become regarded as a garage-rock classic, and MC5’s signature song. The Detroit-based group (“MC” stands for “Motor City”) was inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year.

The band “basically invented punk rock music,” Morello has said.

Also below are videos of covers, from the Roxy show, of Bob Marley’s “Get Up, Stand Up” with Ben Harper and Abraham Marley (Ziggy Marley’s son and Bob Marley’s grandson); and Public Enemy’s “Fight the Power” (with Public Enemy’s Chuck D). Enjoy!
