“On the Way to Cape May”: lots of people are now going in that direction, on this warm late-May afternoon. If this were 50 years ago, there’s a good chance they would hear this South Jersey standard played live by a nightclub band at some point during their stay down there.

These days, admittedly, that’s probably a bit of a long shot. But the sweet, sentimental “On the Way to Cape May,” about a love affair that blossoms on a trip through various towns in Cape May County, remains one of the all-time-great Jersey songs.

Here is a swinging version by the late North Wildwood club owner Cozy Morley.

New Jersey celebrated its 350th birthday in 2014. And in the 350 Jersey Songs series, we marked the occasion by posting 350 songs — one a day, from September 2014 to September 2015 — that have something to do with the state, its musical history, or both. To see the entire list, click here.
