Little City Books, which opened in May in Hoboken, is designed to be more than just a bookstore. Its Indiegogo campaign described its co-owners’ vision as “a genuine independent bookstore and gathering place.”
On Saturday, the store will present its first literary event: a “Writers’ Roundtable” featuring four female authors engaging in “readings and conversation about the writing life,” according to a press release.
The store is at 100 Bloomfield St., and the event takes place at 7 p.m. For information, visit LittleCityBooks.com.
Here are descriptions of the four writers, supplied by Little City Books.
“Jen Grow‘s stories have appeared in The Writer’s Chronicle, Other Voices, The Sun Magazine, Indiana Review and many others. She’s received two Individual Artist Awards from Maryland State Arts. Jen’s stirring debut collection, My Life as a Mermaid, takes a look at the dark side of what it means to live “happily ever after.
“Dylan Landis wrote the novel-in-stories Normal People Don’t Live Like This, a Newsday Top Ten Book of 2009 and a More magazine choice for Top 100 Books Every Woman Should Read. The New York Times called her novel Rainey Royal “captivating and unnerving.” Vanity Fair wrote, “The characters … are blessedly extraordinary.” A journalist & author of six interior-design books, Landis won a 2010 fellowship from the National Endowment from the Arts.
“Caroline Leavitt is the New York Times bestselling author of Is This Tomorrow and Pictures of You, and 8 other novels. Is This Tomorrow was a Jewish Book Council Pick, a San Francisco Chronicle Lit Pick, an Indie Next Pick, and other honors. Pictures of You was a Best Book of the Year from the San Francisco Chronicle, Kirkus Reviews, The Providence Journal and Bookmarks Magazine. She reviews for People and the San Francisco Chronicle and she teaches writing online at Stanford University.
“Susan Henderson is a two-time Pushcart Prize nominee and the recipient of an Academy of American Poets Award. Her debut novel, Up From the Blue, was selected as a Great Group Reads pick by the Women’s National Book Association and a favorite reads feature on the Rosie O’Donnell show.”
A second Writers’ Roundtable is scheduled for June 28, with Leavitt moderating a reading and conversation with novelists Jon Papernick and Jessamyn Hope.
