On Monday, I did a post about New Jersey musicians covering Beatles songs. Unbeknownst to me, Evan Toth had opened the most recent edition of his WFDU.FM radio show, “Garden State Sound,” with a segment devoted to the same topic.
None of the material overlapped, though we did both include The Smithereens.
Here are the five songs Toth played; interestingly, four of the five come from albums devoted exclusively to Beatles covers.
Count Basie: “All My Loving” (from Basie’s Beatle Bag, 1966)
Sarah Vaughan: “The Fool on the Hill” (from Songs of the Beatles, 1981)
John Pizzarelli: “Get Back” (from John Pizzarelli Meets the Beatles, 1998).
Bucky Pizzarelli: “Yesterdays/Yesterday,” a medley of Jerome Kern’s “Yesterday” and The Beatles’ “Yesterday” (from Flashes — A Lifetime in Words and Music (Solo 7-String Guitar, Vol. 3, 2006)
The Smithereens: “Hold Me Tight” (from Meet the Smithereens, 2007).
