On Friday, the White House released two Summer Playlists on Spotify — one for night, one for day — that were created by President Obama. Many of the artists you would expect to find there, are, in fact, there: Bob Dylan, Aretha Franklin, Beyoncé, Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley, Frank Sinatra and so on. But there were some surprises. And the biggest one, perhaps, was the inclusion of Low Cut Connie’s “Boozophilia.”

The band, which is based in Philadelphia but features Adam Weiner of Cherry Hill on piano and lead vocals, has released three albums. “Boozophilia” is a scruffy, feel-good song that was on their 2012 album Call Me Sylvia, and was No. 31 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 50 Top Songs of that year. Check it out below.

“Boozophilia,” by the way, means “love of booze,” thought Weiner has a somewhat more detailed definition.

“I invented the word Boozophilia to refer to (my) attraction to ‘low life,’ dive bar and blue-collar culture that I’ve been toiling in for many years — traveling and playing music and (providing) entertainment in the grimiest and saltiest bars in America,” he told digitalmusicnews.com. “I wrote the song about all these lunatics and weird-balls and gorgeous individuals who populate dank barrooms all over the USA. People with big hearts and busted up dreams and dirty jokes and so much love.”

Weiner also told digitalmusicnews.com that he was told one of Obama’s daughters brought the band to his attention.

New Jersey celebrated its 350th birthday in 2014. And in the 350 Jersey Songs series, we marked the occasion by posting 350 songs — one a day, from September 2014 to September 2015 — that have something to do with the state, its musical history, or both. To see the entire list, click here.
