Historian Doris Kearns Goodwin’s biggest claim to pop-culture fame is that the Oscar-winning film “Lincoln” was based in part on her 2005 book, “Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln.” So it makes a certain kind of sense that she will be the first speaker in New Jersey City University’s new NJCU Presidential Speaker Series, even though the talks are so named because they will be hosted by NJCU president Sue Henderson.
Goodwin’s talk will take place at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 8 at the Margaret Williams Theatre in Hepburn Hall on the NJCU campus, at 2039 Kennedy Boulevard.
Goodwin, who won the 1995 Pulitzer Prize for History for her book, “No Ordinary Time: Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt: The Home Front in World War II,” first became widely known to those who weren’t historians or history buffs via her eloquent on-screen contributions to Ken Burns’ 1994 PBS documentary, “Baseball.”
Her most recent book is “The Bully Pulpit: Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and the Golden Age of Journalism,” and she appeared as an expert commentator in Burns’ most recent documentary, “The Roosevelts.”
The NJCU series is being launched in conjunction with New Jersey’s year-long celebration of its 350th birthday, and will also feature science professor, writer and commentator Michio Kaku (at Liberty Science Center, Dec. 9) and former basketball star and current entrepreneur Shaquille O’Neal (at the Margaret Williams Theatre, Feb. 12).
Tickets for Goodwin’s talk are $35 ($15 for students), or $100 for VIP tickets that include parking and a meet-and-greet reception after the talk. Refreshments will include a New Jersey birthday cake created by Buddy “Cake Boss” Valastro.
Tickets to Kaku’s and O’Neal’s speeches are also $35, and a pass for all three talks is $90.
