The House of Independents will offer a peek into Bob Dylan’s archives on April 10, as part of the Asbury Park Music in Film Festival.
An afternoon of Bob Dylan film clips — all never aired publicly before, or if so only rarely — will be presented as part of this weekend’s Asbury Park Music in Film Festival, Sunday at 1 p.m. at the House of Independents. The event has also been described as “A peek into The Bob Dylan Archives.”
For a serious Dylan fan who happens to live in New Jersey, this looks like an opportunity that should not be missed.
The films are part of the 6,000-piece archive — concert and studio recordings, notebooks, films and more, collected by Dylan over decades — that was recently bought by the George Kaiser Family Foundation and the University of Tulsa, for an estimated $15-$20 million. The archive will be housed in Tulsa, which already has an archive devoted to one of Dylan’s musical heroes, Woody Guthrie.
Among the clips to be screened in Asbury Park are:
• “Girl From The North Country,” 1964. From the unaired Canadian television show “Quest.”
• “Chimes of Freedom,” 1964. Complete performance from Murray Lerner’s film “The Other Side of the Mirror.”
• “She Belongs to Me” and “Ballad of a Thin Man,” 1966. Some of the earliest color footage of Dylan, from his 1966 British tour. The former was shot by D.A. Pennebaker for a never-released documentary.
• “Isis,” 1975. From The Rolling Thunder Revue.
• “Shelter From the Storm,” 1976. Also from the Rolling Thunder Revue, and included in Dylan’s television special “Hard Rain.”
• “Pressing On,” 1980. Live in Buffalo, from Dylan’s gospel phase.
• “Ring Them Bells,” 1993. Filmed at an intimate concert at The Supper Club in New York
• “Cold Irons Bound,” 2002. From the film “Masked and Anonymous.”
Grammy Museum executive director Robert Santelli, a Jersey native who is on the board of the festival (now in its second year), will speak at the event, as will photographer and filmmaker Danny Clinch.
The festival takes place April 8-10 in various Asbury Park venues. Don Cheadle will appear at a screening of “Miles Ahead,” his film about Miles Davis, April 8 at the Paramount Theatre, and other attractions will include a “sneak peek” at an upcoming documentary about Asbury Park’s legendary Upstage Club; films about Frank Zappa, the Grateful Dead, James Booker, Jeff Buckley and Linda Chorney; and performances by the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Joe Grushecky and the Houserockers, Colin Hay, The Bobby Bandiera Band and others.
