Bilal, Rakim, Avery*Sunshine to perform at NJPAC’s free Sounds of the City series

Bilal will headline at NJPAC’s free, outdoor Sounds of the City series, Aug. 25.

Bilal, who stole the show at the June 26 BET Awards show in Los Angeles with his dynamic performance of the late Prince’s “The Beautiful Ones” (see video below), has just a few shows currently scheduled for this summer, and one of them will be at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark. And there will be no admission charge.

He’ll be performing outdoors, at NJPAC’s Theater Square, Aug. 25, as part of the venue’s annual Horizon Foundation Sounds of the City series.

The series will start on July 7 with its traditional opener, DJ Felix Hernandez’s Rhythm Revue Dance Party, and will also feature performers such as Afro-Caribbean group Tiempo Libre, July 14; the legendary hip-hop MC Rakim, July 21; a version of the great reggae group The Wailers led by Junior Marvin, Aug. 4; and singer-songwriter Avery*Sunshine, Aug. 11.
