Montclair Film Fest announces opening, closing and centerpiece films

The complete schedule for the April 28-May 7 Montclair Film Festival will not be announced until April 3, but the festival has announced its opening, closing and centerpiece films. Watch trailers and previews for them, below.

Also, the festival, now in its sixth year, has announced that it will screen a new restoration of the classic 1968 horror film “Night of the Living Dead,” April 29 at the Wellmont Theater, with special guests Russ Streiner (who produced and played the part of Johnny in the film), actress Kyra Schoon (who played the 11-year-old character, Karen Cooper) and the movie’s sound recordist, Gary Streiner, who oversaw the restoration.

The festival also will screen a restoration of Andrei Tarkovsky’s 1979 science fiction film, “Stalker,” April 29 at Cinema505, Montclair Film’s new cinema at its Investors Bank Film and Media Center, located at 505 Bloomfield Ave.

Festival tickets will go on sale to Montclair Film members at 10 a.m. April 3, and to the general public at 10 a.m. April 7. They will be available at montclairfilm.org and at the festival’s new box office at the Investors Bank Film and Media Center.

Opening film, April 28 at the Wellmont Theater: Amanda Lipitz’s “Step.”

Documentary centerpiece, May 5 at the Wellmont Theater: Stanley Nelson’s “Tell Them We Are Rising: America’s Black Colleges and Universities.”

Fiction centerpiece, May 6 at the Wellmont Theater: Geremy Jasper’s “Patti Cake$.”

Closing film, May 7 at the Wellmont Theater: Zoe Lister-Jones’ “Band Aid.”
