Springsteen, Van Zandt duet on ‘Tenth Avenue Freeze-out’ in Red Bank (WATCH video)

by JAY LUSTIG

Steven Van Zandt and Bruce Springsteen perform “Tenth Avenue Freeze-out” together, at the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank.

Steven Van Zandt famously wrote the horn arrangement for “Tenth Avenue Freeze-out,” from Bruce Springsteen’s landmark Born to Run album. But I don’t think the song ever has been performed as it was tonight: As a Springsteen/Van Zandt duet.

Van Zandt and his Disciples of Soul were headlining at Red Bank’s Count Basie Theatre (for which Van Zandt and his wife Maureen serve on the board of trustees). And Springsteen joined them as a surprise guest for the last four songs. Among them was the duet on “Tenth Avenue Freeze-out.” Check out the video of it below, taken by E Street ultrafan Mitch Slater.

Springsteen also performed on “It’s Been a Long Time,” “I Don’t Want to Go Home” and the show’s encore, the Marvin Gaye hit “Can I Get a Witness.”

The show was broadcast live on SiriusXM satellite radio, and will be rebroadcast May 29 at 11 a.m.

Here is the setlist. Songs in bold are from Van Zandt’s new album, Soulfire (thought most have been released by other artists, before).

“Soulfire”
“I’m Coming Back”
“Among the Believers”
“The Blues Is My Business”
“Love on the Wrong Side of Town”
“Until the Good Is Gone”
“Standing in the Line of Fire”
“I Saw the Light”
“Some Things Just Don’t Change”

Here are videos of “Tenth Avenue Freeze-out,” “It’s Been a Long Time,” “I Don’t Want to Go Home” and “The City Weeps Tonight,” all taken by Slater.

Thanks for posting the videos Jay. Last night was very special in many ways but for me seeing Steven and “The Out of Work”guy having so much fun up there (and lucky for me last night up close and personal in Row A at the Basie) brought so much joy to the hearts of everyone there.

The older you get , the more it means.

Any thoughts on why Steven doesn’t play Undefeated? It has long been one of my favorite Steven songs, but maybe I’m in the minority? I know he can’t play everything in the catalog, but just wondering. . . . .

No idea but he has been mixing in some different stuff from show to show. Maybe it will come up later in tour
