“Road Trip Across the USA” will be the theme of six free concerts the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra will present at various venues in June and July.
The program will be music composed by John Williams for the 2012 movie “Lincoln”; Aaron Copland’s “Rodeo”; and Alan Menken’s music for the 1991 animated film “Beauty and the Beast” (also featured in this year’s film version). (UPDATE: A medley of Bruce Springsteen hits has also been added to the program.)
Sameer Patel, associate conductor of the San Diego Symphony, will lead the orchestra at these events.
The shows will take place at the following locations:
June 23, 7:30 p.m.: Oak Ridge Park, Clark. (UPDATE: This show has been moved indoors, to Scotch Plains–Fanwood High School.)
June 27, 8 p.m.: Overpeck County Park, Ridgefield Park.
June 29, 7:30 p.m.: Maxwell Place Park, Hoboken.
June 30, 7:30 p.m.: Branch Brook Park, Newark (with fireworks).
July 1, 8 p.m.: Mercer County Park Festival Grounds, West Windsor (with fireworks).
July 2, 8 p.m.: Marine Park, Red Bank.

Patel and the orchestra will also present the “Road Trip Across the USA” program at the Giralda Music and Arts Festival in Madison, June 25, at 6 p.m. This is a ticketed event; visit morrisarts.org/giralda.
Rounding out the orchestra’s summer activities, it will present “Scores: New Orchestra Works” — featuring new music by composers from the NJSO Edward T. Cone Composition Institute in Princeton — July 15 at 8 p.m. at the Richardson Auditorium at Princeton University, with JoAnn Falletta conducting.
