It is possible that no professional photographer has taken more shots of Southside Johnny than longtime New Jersey resident and occasional NJArts.net contributor John Cavanaugh. For many years, for any appearance by Southside in New Jersey or reasonably close by, there is a very good chance that he has been there.
And so, after it was announced on Dec. 20 that Southside Johnny is retiring from touring, I asked John if he could put together a collection of his personal favorites of Southside Johnny photos he has taken, over the years. The gallery below represents what he came up with.
The 50 photos span 28 years — 1995 to 2023 — and feature Southside performing on his own and with his bands The Asbury Jukes and The Poor Fools, and with other artists including Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Van Zandt, Jon Bon Jovi, Gary U.S. Bonds, Ben E. King, Gene Cornish, Steve Earle and Brian Fallon. A few photos of various Jukes without Southside are also included.
