Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul are releasing their modified version of The Ramones’ “Merry Christmas (I Don’t Want to Fight Tonight)” — recorded at a pre-show soundcheck in Utrecht, Netherlands, Nov. 28 — as a holiday single. For information, visit ume.lnk.to/LittleStevenMerryChristmas.

(Dec. 21 Update: Van Zandt also has released a video for the song; check it out below.)

“This is our tribute to the Ramones, keeping their music alive,” Van Zandt told RollingStone.com. “I needed a third verse so I channeled Joey and wrote what I feel is the third verse he would have written. His brother Mickey heard the record and gave me his blessing.”

The band — which has been on the road for much of the last year, and released a new album, Soulfire, in May — will perform a Holiday Homecoming show at the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank, Dec. 23. Visit countbasietheatre.org.

“Merry Christmas (I Don’t Want to Fight Tonight),” which was written by Joey Ramone, was first released as a B-side for The Ramones “I Wanna Live” single in 1987, and also was included on The Ramones’ 1989 album, Brain Drain.
