PATTI SMITH
Patti Smith will make an appearance at the second annual Montclair Literary Festival, reading from her 2017 book, “Devotion (Why I Write)” — described by The Boston Globe as “an odd amalgam of fact and fiction” — and playing music with her longtime guitarist, Lenny Kaye.
The hour-long event will close the four-day festival, and take place March 18 at 5 p.m. at Montclair’s First Congregational Church.
The festival, which begins March 15 , will include 50 talks, panel discussions, signing, workshops and children’s activities, and feature more than 90 authors, including Tom Perrotta, Anna Quindlen, Meg Wolitzer and Christina Baker Kline. Many of the offerings are free, though some, including Smith’s reading/performance, will be ticketed.

Smith is among the world’s most literary rock stars. She has published about 20 books, mostly of poetry, since the early ’70s, and has often been called a “punk poet” for her music, which merges elements of poetry and punk-rock. Her 2010 memoir, “Just Kids,” won the National Book Award for Nonfiction.
