MARSHALL CRENSHAW
Marshall Crenshaw will sing and play guitar with three surviving members of The Smithereens — guitarist Jim Babjak, bassist Mike Mesaros and drummer Dennis Diken — at the Outpost in the Burbs on June 1, the Montclair coffeehouse has announced. Since the death of Smithereens frontman Pat DiNizio in December, surviving members of the band have performed together at three New Jersey concerts paying tribute to him. They also teamed up with the Gin Blossoms’ Robin Wilson for a show in Illinois, April 19, and have another show with Wilson scheduled for April 28 on Long Island.
Crenshaw sang “Strangers When We Meet,” “Even If I Never Get Back Home” and the Buddy Holly song “Well … All Right” at the Jan. 13 DiNizio tribute concert that took place at the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank. Credited as Jerome Jerome, he played keyboards on the original studio version of “Strangers When We Meet” that was on The Smithereens’ 1986 debut album, Especially for You.
