A scrapbook kept by Bruce Springsteen’s mother and The Boss’ high school yearbook will be among the items displayed in “Springsteen: His Hometown,” an exhibit opening at the Monmouth County Historical Association in his hometown, Freehold, Sept. 29. An “opening preview party” is also scheduled for Sept. 28.
The exhibit will be up for about a year before closing in the fall of 2020.
According to a press release, the exhibit will have more than 150 items and “provide a comprehensive look of how Monmouth County, NJ has been thematically woven into Bruce Springsteen’s music and art throughout his career.”
Proceeds will benefit the historical association itself. For tickets and information, visit SpringsteenHisHometown.com.
The items are currently housed by the Monmouth County Historical Association and The Bruce Springsteen Archives and Center for American Music at Monmouth University in West Long Branch. The exhibit is co-curated by Monmouth University specialist professor of public history Melissa Ziobro and MCHA director of collections Bernadette Rogoff, with Springsteen Archives director Eileen Chapman and Grammy Museum founding director Robert Santelli serving as advisers.
Other items on display include a poster advertising a show by Springsteen’s pre-E Street, Freehold-based band, The Castiles; and 19th century documents pertaining to Springsteen’s ancestors Alexander Springsteen and John Springsteen
The exhibition’s opening coincides with the centennial of Freehold Borough as well as Springsteen’s 70th birthday (Sept. 23).
