Bruce Springsteen performs at the Monmouth County Historical Association in Freehold, Sept. 28.

Bruce Springsteen made a rare musical appearance in his original hometown, Freehold, Sept. 28, joining his old friends Joe Grushecky & the Houserockers for one song at an event celebrating the opening of the “Springsteen: His Hometown” exhibition at the Monmouth County Historical Association.

They played the Springsteen-written “Light of Day” together in a tent behind the Monmouth County Historical Association building; you can see the performance in the video below.

“I’ve can’t stay long; I’ve got my family in the City,” Springsteen said after he took the stage, referring to New York. (His daughter Jessica is competing in an equestrian event at Governors Island this weekend.)

He went on to thank those who attended the event, and those who put together the exhibition, before performing the song.

Bobby Bandiera performed before Grushecky, and original E Street Band drummer Vini Lopez was among those in attendance.

The exhibition — containing about 150 items that have to do with Springsteen’s career, his family’s history, and Freehold itself — officially opens on Sept. 29 and will run through next fall, and possibly later. It will be open Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
