Bruce Springsteen and Sheryl Crow performed Crow’s stark anti-war song “Redemption Day” together, with the two backing themselves with acoustic guitars, at the Stand Up for Heroes benefit at the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York, Nov. 4. You can watch a video of it, below.
This was the first time the two have ever performed together.
Springsteen also performed five songs on his own — “Bobby Jean,” “I’ll Work for Your Love,” “I’m on Fire,” “Dancing in the Dark” and “Land of Hope and Dreams” — at the benefit.
This was the 13th annual Stand Up for Heroes benefit, with proceeds going to the Bob Woodruff Foundation, which supports injured soldiers and their families. Woodruff is the TV anchorman who was seriously injured while covering the war in Iraq in 2006. Other participants in the event, which was part of the New York Comedy Festival, included Jon Stewart and John Oliver.
“Redemption Day” is from Crow’s self-titled 1996 album. Johnny Cash’s recording of it was released on his posthumous 2010 album, American VI: Ain’t No Grave, and Crow released a version incorporating some of his vocals as a single this April, and as part of her Threads album in August.
The song’s lyrics were inspired by a trip Crow took to war-torn Bosnia. Among the lyrics Springsteen sang were the following:
Fire rages in the streets
And swallows everything it meets
It’s just an image often seen
On television
Come leaders, come you men of great
Let us hear you pontificate
Your many virtues laid to waste
And we ain’t listening
