In her pensive but sweetly romantic song “You and I” (see below), Stacia Thiel sings of a couple, who have been together for a long time, reconnecting and “acting like we just met.”
In the chorus, she sings:
Let’s stay here, no need to go
And let reality into this show …
Oh, it’s been a long, long while …
Since it was you and I.
The Montclair-based singer-songwriter calls the song “a wistful remembrance of the past … an affection for those moments of connection with someone you love and the deep desire to hide out in that space away from the realities of the world just awhile longer.”
Thiel chose “You and I” — originally released on her 2019 album, Straight to the Middle — to perform for NJArts.net’s Songs to See Us Through series, created in response to the coronavirus crisis. Due to social distancing, a lot of couples, of course, are spending more time together than they have for years or even decades — cocooned together, away from the rest of the world.
Thiel also has been posting new performances of other songs to Facebook, on her Back Porch Song Series; to see them, visit facebook.com/stacia.thiel.
The series started, March 21, with a cover of Tom Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down,” which Thiel described as “a song I turn to when I need to connect with inner strength and resilience.” You can watch that below, as well.

NJArts.net’s Songs to See Us Through series is designed to spotlight songs relevant to the coronavirus crisis and encourage readers to support the artists who made them (and won’t be able to generate income via concerts at this time). Click here for links to all songs in the series.
We encourage artists to email us submissions (newly recorded, if possible) at njartsdaily@gmail.com. Please include links to sites such as Patreon and Venmo. Readers can also make suggestions via that email address.
