Christian McBride of Montclair is not only one of the most highly regarded and busiest bassists in the jazz world, but he stays intimately involved with the local music community through his work as co-founder and artistic chair of the Montclair-based educational organization, Jazz House Kids, and as artistic director of the TD James Moody Democracy of Jazz Festival at NJPAC, and in many other ways as well.
On Friday, his own trio — featuring pianist Christian Sands and drummer Ulysses Owens Jr., and with McBride’s wife and Jazz House Kids co-founder Melissa Walker on guest vocals — will present a rare hometown show at The Outpost in the Burbs. And they, and their fans, will have reason to celebrate: McBride won his fourth Grammy last night. He was honored as a member of pianist Chick Corea’s trio (also featuring drummer Brian Blade), which won the Jazz Instrumental Album award, for its three-CD live set, Trilogy.

New Jersey celebrated its 350th birthday in 2014. And in the 350 Jersey Songs series, we marked the occasion by posting 350 songs — one a day, from September 2014 to September 2015 — that have something to do with the state, its musical history, or both. To see the entire list, click here.
