Eddie Vedder and Margo Price will perform and Whoopi Goldberg and Steve Buscemi will be among those making appearances on “Stand With Teachers,” a virtual fundraiser for Steven Van Zandt’s educational TeachRock organization taking place Dec. 21 at 8 p.m.
Others making appearances will include Melle Mel, Tom Morello and actors Bobby Cannavale, Edward Norton, Vincent Pastore, Maureen Van Zandt, Trønd Fausa Aurvåg and Steinar Sagen. (The last two co-starred with Steven Van Zandt in the Netflix series, “Lilyhammer.”)
(Dec. 17 Update: Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne and Sammy Hagar have been added to the event’s lineup.)
Tickets range from $25 to $150 and are available via teachrock.org. The event will remain streamable for three days following the initial showing.
“Being an educator has never been easy, but 2020 posed greater challenges than any schools have ever faced,” said Steven Van Zandt in a press release. “And, as usual, teachers rose to the occasion. When schools shut down overnight, teachers rallied and moved classes online. But that’s not all — like the essential workers they are, teachers continue to risk their health to serve students and families, be it to distribute tech to keep students connected, or meals to help families in need. Teachers are the plainclothes superheroes in our midst. They deserve to be heard and celebrated.”
TeachRock provides tools that can be used in online education, and reports that use of its open-source, online curriculum increased by nearly 400 percent during COVID-caused school shutdowns.
According to the press release, “TeachRock currently reaches 23,000 schools in nearly 7,000 districts representing all 50 states. TeachRock has users in 121 countries. All of the K-12 resources at TeachRock.org are available to teachers, students, and families at no cost.”
