Bruce Springsteen will reportedly take part in an Aug. 21 concert at New York’s Central Park, according to the New York Post.
” ‘Bruce will do a duet with Patti Smith,’ an insider added,” stated the article, which also reports that Paul Simon and Jennifer Hudson will be among the concert’s participants.
(July 1 Update: Springsteen’s participation has now been official confirmed.)
The concert will air on CNN, according to the Post.
Springsteen and Smith co-wrote Smith’s biggest hit, “Because the Night,” in the ’70s. Springsteen, coincidentally, played and talked about that song on his SiriusXM satellite radio DJ show, today.
They have performed “Because the Night” together several times over the years, most recently at the Beacon Theatre in New York in 2018.
In June, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said “We decided to do something classic, iconic, a massive concert in Central Park. It will celebrate the summer of New York City, the comeback, and it will emphatically make the point there is no stopping New York.”
De Blasio also said he had asked for legendary record company executive Clive Davis’ help in organizing the concert. Davis played a large part in the early successes of both Springsteen and Smith.
Springsteen does not have a “Springsteen on Broadway” show scheduled for Aug. 21, which is unusual, because it’s a Saturday, and he is otherwise on his regular schedule (which includes Saturday shows) that week.
