The Passage Theatre Company presents most of its plays at the Mill Hill Playhouse in Trenton.

The Trenton-based Passage Theatre Company has given its 2021-22 season the title “Trenton Makes,” as all of its offerings, developed through its PlayLab Program, are world premieres of plays that are based in Trenton itself.

“Each show is completely different, but they all reflect the heart and hope found in this community,” said Passage artistic director C. Ryanne Domingues, in a press release.

The shows include:

Feb. 3-20: “The OK Trenton Project.” Written by David Lee White, Richard Bradford and members of the OK Trenton Ensemble, this play is based on a true story about a group of Trenton students who created a sculpture for the community, “Helping Hands,” that was removed, four days after installation, because of complaints that it resembled a gang symbol. The play “explores the role art plays in our community and the consequences we face when it’s taken away,” according to the press release. Domingues directs.

March 30-April 3: “Junior High #2: The Hedgepeth-Williams Story.” Created by playwrights Rich Bradford and David Lee White with students at Hedgepeth Williams Middle School, this play tells the story of the 1940s fight against segregation at the school that led to a landmark New Jersey Supreme Court decision. Ozzie Jones directs.

May 5-22: “Group!” This musical (featuring music by Aleksandra M. Weil, lyrics by Eloise Govedare and book by Julia B. Rosenblatt) is about six women battling addiction. Maria Patrice Amon directs.

All shows will be presented at the Mill Hill Playhouse except for “Junior High #2,” which will be presented at Hedgepeth Williams Middle School.

There will also be two special events: A Writers Roundtable on Sept. 25 in which several of the season’s playwrights will take about the shows; and a two-actor presentation of “A Christmas Carol” on Dec. 11 that will serve as Passage’s annual holiday fundraiser.
