The Smithereens, featuring Marshall Crenshaw on lead vocals and guitar, have been added to the lineup of the free, annual fall edition of the Hoboken Arts and Music Festival, taking place on Washington Street from the Observer Highway to 7th Street, Oct. 3 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The Smithereens and Crenshaw previously played together at the Hoboken fest in 2018.
Other performers will include singer-songwriter Freedy Johnston, the Karyn Kuhl Band and Ernie Brooks’ Tape Hiss band. Since Johnston has sung with The Smithereens in the past, it wouldn’t be surprising if he joined them at some point in their set, too.
The fiery rock singer-songwriter Kuhl is joined in her band by guitarist James Mastro, bassist Larry Heinemann and drummer Jonpaul Pantozzi.
Ernie Brooks — a member of Jonathan Richman’s beloved Modern Lovers band in the ’70s who later worked with the avant-garde musician Arthur Russell — plays Modern Lovers and Russell material and more in Tape Hiss with Steve Shelley (of Sonic Youth), Peter Zummo, David Nagler and Pete Galub.
Other performers on the festival’s three stages (one of which will be devoted to children’s entertainment) will include Manouche Bag, Milton, Swingadelic, Orquesta La Experiencia, Tony Corrao (a past winner of Hoboken’s annual Sinatra singing contest), Erin Lee & the Up Past Bedtime Band, Little RocknRollers, Music With Corey, Music Together, and School of Rock.
