The John J. Cali School of Music at Montclair State University is inviting the general public to attend certain parts of its second annual Immersive Residency program. This is a series of seven week-long residencies featuring world-class musician and represents, according to the school’s website, “an ongoing exploration of the ever-changing landscape of music today, introducing students and the community at large to amazing events of today and to a future that will be, at times, less traditional.”
The first residency is Oct. 2-7 and will feature singer-songwriter Jon B. and rapper Rahzel, along with guests Toni Blackman, Elliot Gann and Amir Issaa. There will be eight free public events (pre-reservations are required) along with some events that will be open to students only.
These are the public events. All are at Leshowitz Recital Hall unless otherwise noted.
Oct. 2, 6 p.m. at Kasser Theater: “Kickoff Concert” with Jon B, and Rahzel, performing on their own and with Cali students.
Oct. 3, 1 p.m.: Beatboxing Masterclass with Rahzel.
Oct. 3, 6 p.m.: “Cali Conversations” with Rahzel, hosted by Cali director Anthony Mazzocchi.
Oct. 3, 8 p.m.: Afro-Italian rapper and activist Amir Issaa, performance and Q&A session.
Oct. 4, 11:15 a.m.: “Secrets to Audio Production.”
Oct. 5, 1:30 p.m.: “Midweek Series” with rapper, entrepreneur and motivational speaker Toni Blackman.
Oct. 6, 4:30 p.m.: “Sample This: The Foundations of Sampling and Its Legacy on Beatmaking and Music Production” with Elliot Gann, director of the educational organization, Today’s Future Sound.
Oct. 7, 5 p.m. at Montclair State Outdoor Amphitheater: Grand Finale.
