Usually when a nationally known rock musician, accustomed to playing at theaters and amphitheaters, makes a low-key “unplugged” appearance at a New Jersey nightclub, you’ll be lucky if any YouTube videos at all surface. And they’ll often be taken by a fan on an iPhone, with murky sounds and visuals. But here’s a big surprise: A video from a show by Brian Fallon at Crossroads in Garwood in December, with absolutely pristine sound and crystal-clear camera work. You really feel like you’re in the club, listening.
Fallon is best known, of course, for fronting the band The Gaslight Anthem, which formed in New Brunswick in 2006. But the song he’s performing here, “Behold the Hurricane,” is from Elsie, the 2011 album by his side project, The Horrible Crowes (also featuring guitarist Ian Perkins).
New Jersey celebrated its 350th birthday in 2014. And in the 350 Jersey Songs series, we marked the occasion by posting 350 songs — one a day, from September 2014 to September 2015 — that have something to do with the state, its musical history, or both. To see the entire list, click here.
