In honor of the 50th anniversary, this year, of the release of Bruce Springsteen’s debut album, Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J., SiriusXM satellite radio’s E Street Radio channel (channel 20) has put together a five-part series, “50 Years of Bruce Springsteen,” hosted by Greg Drew and premiering daily at 9 a.m. (with repeats at 5 p.m.) this week. The show will feature 50 of the greatest or most significant moments in Springsteen’s career from those 50 years — presented in chronological order, 10 at a time — with lots of music between the discussion.
Technically, the series covers 51 years, since the first selection is Springsteen’s audition for legendary Columbia Records executive John Hammond in May 1972. Other selections for the first episode (covering the early years of Springsteen’s career, up to 1980) include rock critic (and future Springsteen manager) Jon Landau pronouncing Springsteen “rock and roll future” in a review for The Real Paper in Boston, in 1974; Springsteen appearing simultaneously on the covers of Time and Newsweek magazines, in 1975; and Springsteen and the E Street Band performing at the “No Nukes” benefit concerts at Madison Square Garden in 1979.
The episodes will also be available to be heard, on demand, on the SiriusXM app.
This is the schedule:
Show 1 (1973-1980) premieres Feb. 6.
Show 2 (1981-1988) premieres Feb. 7.
Show 3 (1989-1999) premieres Feb. 8.
Show 4 (2000-2009) premieres Feb. 9.
Show 5 (2010-2023) premieres Feb. 10.
Undoubtedly, there will be future repeats as well.
Springsteen launched his first E Street Band tour in six years last week in Tampa; the tour continues Feb. 7 in Hollywood, Fla.
