In Texas-raised, Nashville-based singer-songwriter Abby Cone’s new single “I Hate Springsteen,” she does indeed sing those three words.
But rest assured, she really doesn’t.
It’s a post-breakup song in which she cites her hatred for Springsteen as one of the things that would be true only if she weren’t still in love (which she still is, to some extent).
She sings:
I love being alone
I hate Springsteen
Texas ain’t home
Grass ain’t green
Yeah, if that’s true
We’re still 22
And I don’t miss you
You can watch the video below. It begins with a snippet from a 1973 Springsteen in-concert song introduction. The Boss is heard saying: “All the singers have lines they say before songs to the people they dedicate it to. But, you know, dedication’s a funny thing.” (The connection to “I Hate Springsteen” is unclear.)
John Osborne of Brothers Osborne plays the guitar solo on Cone’s song.
Cone recently opened for Orville Peck at The Stone Pony Summer Stage in Asbury Park. You can watch a clip, below, of her performing the 1980 George Jones hit “He Stopped Loving Her Today” at that show.
She will open for Kimberly Perry (of The Band Perry, which is on hiatus) at a “CMT’s Next Women of Country” show at The Gramercy Theatre in New York, Sept. 19. For tickets, visit livenation.com.
