Mary Bridget Davies, who received a Tony nomination in 2014 for starring in “A Night With Janis Joplin” on Broadway, will return to the role Oct. 3-19 at The Bell Theater at Bell Works in Holmdel, and also co-direct the production with multi-talented New Jersey-based rock and theater star Remember Jones.
“Mary has been a friend on and off stage for many years,” said Remember Jones in a press release. “We see and hear the world similarly in so many ways and to re-envision this show hand-in-hand is an honor.”
Reviewing “A Night With Janis Joplin” at The McCarter Theatre Center in Princeton in 2017, I wrote that “The show is basically structured like a concert, late in Joplin’s life, featuring an eight-piece band plus four backing vocalists. Sometimes, the backing vocalists sing as Joplin’s influences (Etta James, The Chantels, Odetta, Nina Simone, Aretha Franklin, Bessie Smith). In between songs, Joplin talks, at length, to the audience.”
Remember Jones will also play the title character in Stephen Trask & John Cameron Mitchell’s “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” which will be presented at The Bell Theater in collaboration with The Asbury Park Theater Company, June 13-29. (Remember Jones is producing artistic director at Asbury Park Theater Company).
The Bell Theater’s season will also include Robert Haring’s “Steel Magnolias,” July 25-Aug. 10.
“While musicals and concerts make up the majority of our programming,” said Andrew DePrisco, executive artistic director at both The Bell Theater and The Axelrod Performing Arts Center in Deal, “we are thrilled to be producing our first play, and we’ve selected one of the most beloved of all American plays.”
