Black Potatoe Music Festival 2018: A video preview

by JAY LUSTIG

Willy Porter will be among the performers at this years Black Potatoe Music Festival.

Now in its 22nd year, the Black Potatoe Music Festival is bringing, as always, a tremendous amount of musical talent — in genres ranging from rock to folk, pop, blues, gospel, country and jazz — to the Red Mill Museum in Clinton. Thirty-nine sets will take place from July 12 to 15, with six scheduled for July 12 and 13, 17 for July 14, and 10 for July 15.

Something that’s sure to be talked about at this year’s festival: Black Potatoe is moving into the world of independent filmmaking with its first project, “The Decade,” currently in production. The soundtrack will feature songs by a variety of Black Potatoe-affiliated artists.

“The idea of finding new ways to get great new music to the masses is very appealing to me,” Black Potatoe Matt Angus wrote on the film’s Indiegogo crowd-funding page. “Over the years, Black Potatoe has continued to declare our mantra proudly — ‘Demand Your Independents!’ — long before it was hip to push ‘Indies.’ .. Black Potatoe, meaning myself, wants to continue the work we have been doing for 30 years to help lead young bands to find their way to a place where they can make a living wage and this is why this campaign is important to me.”

I’m sure I’ll be writing more on “The Decade” once it is finished, but for now, here’s a look at what’s coming up at this year’s festival, with the schedule and videos for most of the artists.
