In recognition of the April 26 American Music Honors show at Monmouth University in West Long Branch — at which John Fogerty will be honored by Bruce Springsteen — it seemed like a good time to put together a collection of videos in which Springsteen sings Fogerty’s songs, or the two perform together.
This is the third annual American Music Honors show, presented by The Bruce Springsteen Archives & Center for American Music at Monmouth University, and it will take place at Monmouth University’s Pollak Theatre. Smokey Robinson, Emmylou Harris, Tom Morello and Joe Ely will be honored, along with Fogerty. Springsteen will present Ely with his award, in addition to Fogerty; Stevie Van Zandt, Patti Scialfa and Nils Lofgren will do so for Robinson, Harris and Morello, respectively.
In conjunction with the American Music Honors show, an online fundraising auction for the Archives is being held though May 8, HERE.
I have also included Springsteen’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction speech for Fogerty’s band Creedence Clearwater Revival. In it, he said about Fogerty: “As a songwriter, only few did as much in three minutes. He was Old Testament, shaggy-haired prophet, a fatalist; funny too. … He was severe, he was precise, he said what he had to say and got out of there. He was lyrically spare and beautiful. He created a world of childhood memory and of men and women, back-to-the-wall. A landscape of swamps, bayous, endless rivers, gypsy women, back porches, hound dogs chasing ghosts, devils, bad moons rising, straight out of the blues tradition. He turned it into a vision that was all his own and in Doug (Clifford), Stu (Cook) and Tom (Fogerty), he had the band that could back it up.”
Here are the videos, in chronological order. (Note: This is not intended to be a complete collection of every time these two performed together or Springsteen performed a Fogerty song.) Enjoy!
