With one minute of a new version of Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” by H.E.R., being used today in a Super Bowl commercial, and with Springsteen’s Born to Run album celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, it seemed like a good time to compile some of the other covers of this trademark Springsteen song that have been recorded, or performed in concert, over the years.
“We’re born to run,” H.E.R. (née Gabriella Sarmiento Wilson) recently said. “There’s so many layers to that message. It’s like you’re born to be exactly who you are, to chase your path and follow your own dreams and your own heart. It’s not about anyone else. You’re born uniquely you.”
Here are 20 versions of “Born to Run,” including concert versions by The Killers, Jon Bon Jovi and Billy Joel that feature Springsteen himself; one by Roger Daltrey of The Who; a ukulele-and-vocals version by Emily Saliers of Indigo Girls; a “Sesame Street” parody; and more. We’ll start with H.E.R.’s Dove commercial.
