Buddy Guy, arguably the world’s greatest living blues musician, performed with his Damned Right Blues Band at the State Theatre in New Brunswick, Aug. 17, and Wes Orshoski got some great photos of him. Check them out in the gallery below.
Guy, 81, is a Louisiana native who has played a big part in the Chicago blues scene since the late 1950s. Blues and blues-rock aficionados have been in awe of him since the 1960s — “Buddy Guy was to me what Elvis was for others,” Eric Clapton once said — but for the last 25 years or so, he has been embraced by a wider audience. His 1991 album Damn Right, I’ve Got the Blues, featuring guest appearances by Clapton, Jeff Beck and Mark Knopfler, launched the comeback.
His latest album, 2015’s Born to Play Guitar, also featured some high-profile guest stars — Van Morrison, Joss Stone, Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top and Kim Wilson of The Fabulous Thunderbirds — and won the Best Blues Album Grammy Award.
