(AUG. 7 UPDATE: This event has been postponed indefinitely because of the Screen Actors Guild Strike)
Danny DeVito — who directed, co-produced and co-starred in the 1996 movie “Matilda” — will provide live narration for it when it screens, with live music by the New Jersey Symphony, at the State Theatre in New Brunswick, Sept. 9 at 8 p.m. And David Newman, who composed the music, will conduct his own score.
DeVito played the title character’s father in the film, in addition to serving as its narrator.
The movie was based on Roald Dahl’s 1988 novel about a girl with telekinetic powers that also inspired a musical that debuted in England in 2010.
The Symphony’s 2022-23 season ends this weekend with shows in Newark and Red Bank, and its 2023-34 season won’t officially open until October.
VIP tickets for “Matilda” will include a pre-concert talk with DeVito and Newman, and a post-concert meet-and-greet and photo opportunity with them.
