In 1974, E Street Band keyboardist David Sancious and drummer Ernest “Boom” Carter left the band, together, to form their own jazz fusion group, Tone, with bassist Gerald Carboy. On Oct. 6 at 7 p.m., Sancious, Carter and Carboy will reunite for “An Evening With Tone,” a free event at the Pollak Theatre at Monmouth University in West Long Branch.
The Bruce Springsteen Archives and Center for American Music at Monmouth University is presenting the event, which will be hosted by Bob Santelli, founding executive director of the Grammy Museum. He’ll interview the three musicians before their performance.
Also, Barry Schneier and Chris Phillips will be on site to sign their book, “Bruce Springsteen: Rock and Roll Future.” The coffee table book was published earlier this year and features Schneier’s photos from the 1974 Cambridge, Mass., concert after which future Springsteen manager Jon Landau, reviewing the show, wrote “I saw rock and roll future and its name is Bruce Springsteen.” Both Sancious and Carter were still in the band at the time of that show.
Tone released several albums before breaking up in 1978, with Sancious going on to work with Peter Gabriel, Eric Clapton, Sting and others. Carter and Carboy have also remained active and busy musicians since ’78.
