Ed Sheeran set a concert attendance record for MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, June 11, attracting 89,106 fans. It was also the British singer-songwriter’s biggest U.S. show to date.
There have, of course, been many sold-out shows at the Meadowlands stadium before — there were three just last month, by Taylor Swift — but Sheeran’s in-the-round stage set-up allowed him to pack more people in than ever before.
The previous MetLife concert-attendance record-holder was U2, who attracted 88,941 fans in 2011, also with an in-the-round stage configuration.
Sheeran posted to social media, “Played my biggest ever USA show today and broke the ticket record at MetLife. I really don’t take this for granted, my dad told me if you can make it in New York you can make it anywhere, and today was really reminiscing about playing my first show at mercury lounge in 2012 to 130 people. It feels like a dream today. I love you all, see you in Toronto.”
Sheeran performs at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, June 17-18.
Sheeran’s June 10-11 concerts at MetLife Stadium featured opening sets by Khalid and Dylan and were part of his +–=÷× Tour (also known as The Mathematics Tour), which follows the release of his albums = (in 2021) and – (this year).
