Five free concerts will be part of New Jersey Symphony’s 2025 summer season

New Jersey Symphony at one of its past free concerts at Branch Brook Park in Newark.

Five free concerts at five different locations will be part of New Jersey Symphony’s summer season.

The dates and locations will be:

June 18, 7 p.m.: Marine Park, Red Bank (part of North to Shore Festival)
June 24, 8 p.m.: Ocean County College, Toms River
June 25, 7:30 p.m.: Raritan Bay Waterfront Park, South Amboy
June 27, 7:30 p.m.: Branch Brook Park, Newark (part of North to Shore Festival)
June 29, 7:30 p.m.: Liberty State Park, Jersey City

In addition, the symphony will perform at Giralda Farms in Madison, June 21 at 6 p.m. This show will be part of the Giralda Music & Arts Festival, which is a ticketed event.

The program for these six performances will include Overture to The Magic Flute, by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart; “Silk Hat and a Walking Cane” from Dances in the Canebrakes, by Florence Price; Romanian Folk Dances, by Béla Bartók; Overture to William Tell, by Gioachino Rossini; Carousel Waltz, by Richard Rodgers; Duke Ellington! (arr. Custer), by Duke Ellington; Satchmo! (arr. Ricketts), by various composers; Highlights from Wicked (arr. Ricketts), by Stephen Schwartz; and Armed Forces Salute (arr. Lowden), by various composers.

Gregory D. McDaniel, NJPAC’s 2024–25 Colton Conducting Fellow, will conduct these six concerts. In addition, McDaniel will conduct the symphony’s “Season Preview Concert,” July 9 at 7 p.m. at The Victoria Theater at NJPAC in Newark. The program for this approximately hour-long concert will be: Selection from Symphony No. 5, by Ludwig van Beethoven; Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture, by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky; Pavane, by Gabriel Fauré; The Hebrides (Fingal’s Cave), by Felix Mendelssohn; Romanian Folk Dances, by Béla Bartók; and Finlandia, by Jean Sibelius.

The preview concert is free, though registration is required.

Also coming up this summer, the symphony will provide a live soundtrack to screenings of the hit 2010 film “How to Train Your Dragon” at The Mayo Performing Arts Center in Morristown, July 11 at 7 p.m.; The State Theatre in New Brunswick, July 12 at 2 p.m.; and Prudential Hall at NJPAC in Newark, July 13 at 2 p.m. Lawrence Loh will conduct John Powell’s Oscar-nominated score.

The Symphony will also perform at “New Scores: The Cone Composition Institute Concert,” July 19 at 8 p.m. at The Richardson Auditorium at Princeton University. Christopher Rountree will conduct, Cone Composition Institute director Steven Mackey will host, and the program will include Agita, by Claire Cope; Kairosclerosis, by Max Eidinoff; Fractured Transformations, by Hannah Ishizaki; as the garden bows, by Nicole Knorr; and Tonic, by Steven Mackey.
