In honor of the 100th anniversary of the late Pete Seeger’s birth, which is May 3, the city of Hoboken will present a free concert paying tribute to him at Sinatra Park, June 6 at 7 p.m. For information, visit hobokennj.gov/departments/cultural-affairs.
The Demolition String Band, featuring Elena Skye and Boo Reiners, will host and perform. Other participants, most of whom are longtime mainstays of the Hoboken music scene, will include Richard Barone, Karyn Kuhl, Queen Esther, Emily Turonis, Kate Jacobs, Gene D. Plumber, Glenn Morrow, Jon Fried & Deena Shoshkes (of The Cucumbers and The Campfire Flies), Tiphanie Doucet, Sean Kiely, Nick Conte, Gary Van Miert (of The Sensational Country Blues Wonders), Edward Horan, Perry Dale Brody and Abbe Rivers.
Sinatra Park is located on Sinatra Drive, between 4th and 5th streets, and offers a great view of the Hudson River and the New York skyline.
Seeger — who wasn’t just a folk legend, but was an environmental and political activist and a mentor to many younger musicians — died in 2014, at the age of 94.
Here is a video of Seeger performing his friend Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land” with Bruce Springsteen and others at “We Are One: The Obama Inaugural Celebration at the Lincoln Memorial” in Washington, D.C., in 2009:
