In response to the coronavirus crisis, the Montclair-based educational organization, Jazz House Kids, is starting a weekly online event, “Friday Night Listening Party.” The great bassist Christian McBride, JHK’s artistic chair and the husband of JHK founder Melissa Walker, will host.
The first one will take place March 20 at 8 p.m. (EST) and be viewable on Zoom and Facebook Live.
It is described in a JHK mailing as an “interactive hang” in viewers can ask questions and make comments. McBride, at his Montclair home, will “share and riff on some of his all-time favorite recordings of the late great pianist and composer, McCoy Tyner. Christian toured and recorded with the jazz great many times over the years, so he will have a lot to share.”
Tyner died on March 6 at the age of 81.
Installments in this weekly series will feature JHK faculty members and guests, and spotlight the work of major jazz artists.
The webcast can be seen at facebook.com/jazzhousekids.
Jazz House Kids has also announced that it is postponing its Spring Gala, which had been scheduled to take place May 12 at City Winery in New York. The new date has not been announced yet.
Jazz House Kids is currently offering “Remote Learning Classes,” online.
