Jesse Malin, shown performing at The Beacon Theatre in New York in December, will be one of the artists paying tribute to Patti Smith at Carnegie Hall in March.

Jesse Malin, who is still recovering from a 2023 spinal stroke but returned to the stage with two shows at The Beacon Theatre in New York in December, has been added to the lineup of “People Have the Power: A Celebration of Patti Smith,” a concert taking place at Carnegie Hall in New York on March 26.

Other confirmed performers include Michael Stipe, Matt Berninger (The National), Courtney Barnett, Sharon Van Etten, Alison Mosshart (of The Kills), Kronos Quartet, Ben Harper, Karen O, Kim Gordon & Bill Nace, and Angel Olsen. Tony Shanahan, a longtime member of Smith’s backing band, will lead the house band, which will also feature Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea, Rolling Stones drummer Steve Jordan, and others.

Proceeds will benefit music education programs. For ticket information, visit musicof.org. (Some of the artists will also participate in an open-to-the-public rehearsal show at City Winery, March 25.)

Malin will also perform at a Light of Day WinterFest concert taking place at The Count Basie Center for the Arts in Red Bank on Jan. 18.

The Carnegie Hall show is the latest in a series of tribute/benefit concerts presented by Michael Dorf of City Winery. Past editions have honored Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, The Who, David Bowie and others. While Smith is not confirmed to participate on March 26, she has performed at some of the past shows in the series, so her presence would not exactly be a surprise.

The series’ last tribute — honoring the songs of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young — took place on May 13, 2024, and featured Shawn Colvin, Steve Earle, Iron & Wine, Guster, Rickie Lee Jones, Grace Potter, Todd Rundgren and others, with Graham Nash performing, as well.

Over the past 20 years, approximately $2 million has been raised in the series.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Smith’s landmark debut album, Horses.
