Monkees Nesmith and Dolenz to appear in Little Steven’s Underground Garage series at Basie

by JAY LUSTIG

The Count Basie Theatre will present a concert by Mike Nesmith and Micky Dolenz of The Monkees, June 25.

Monkees members Mike Nesmith and Micky Dolenz will perform together at the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank, June 25. The show, titled “The Monkees Present the Mike Nesmith & Micky Dolenz Show,” will be part of the Citi Presents Little Steven’s Underground Garage at the Basie series, and be hosted by Steven Van Zandt.

Tickets, priced from $40 to $99, go on sale Feb. 23 at 10 a.m.; visit countbasietheatre.org.

The show is currently scheduled to be the last night of a tour that will start on June 1. The duo will also perform at the Keswick Theatre in Philadelphia, June 21, and the Beacon Theatre in New York, June 22.

The Basie web site describes the show by Nesmith, 75, and Dolenz, 72, as “A Very Special Musical Journey From Last Train to Clarksville to Me & Magdalena.”

The show will also feature “deep cuts and rarities,” according to RollingStone.com.

“It will be very different than a Monkees show,” Nesmith told Rolling Stone. “I mean, it’ll be Monkees music, but there’s no pretense there about Micky and I being the Monkees. We’re not. We’re the remnants.”

The band was originally a quartet, of course. Davy Jones died in 2012, and Peter Tork has said that he is skipping this tour in order to concentrate on a recording project.
