The South Plainfield-based all-male dance company 10 Hairy Legs, which has been on hiatus since April 1 due to the pandemic, has made the decision to legally dissolve on Dec. 31. According to a press release, its works will be archived in the Library of Congress.
In its eight-year history, 10 Hairy Legs produced 17 commissioned works and seven original scores, and toured internationally and well as performing locally. In a 2018 article for the Palm Beach Daily News, Demetrius Klein called them “by far, the best American male modern dancers one could have the good fortune of seeing these days … 10 Hairy Legs shows what modern dance should be.”
10 Hairy Legs’ founding artistic director, Randy James, stepped down from that role in August.
“It breaks my heart that we are no longer but I have no doubt that our wonderful company members will continue the tradition and keep contributing to the world of dance,” said co-president Liz Miles in the press release.
Funds remaining after dissolution will be given to the Dance on the Lawn festival in Montclair to create the 10HL DOTL NJ Emerging Commissioned Choreographer Award.
Fans are invited to express how 10 Hairy Legs had an impact on their lives by emailing bsobo@10hl.org by Jan. 15. Some comments will be included in the Library of Congress Archive.
