The Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn has announced what it is calling its “reimagined” 2020-21 season, which will include virtual concerts, musicals livestreamed exclusively for subscribers and, possibly, shows for live audiences by the end of the season.
Shows that had originally been planned for this season — including “The Wanderer,” “Clue” and “Bruce” — will be postponed to the 2021-22 season.
“We designed the season to take us one step at a time from solo virtual concerts to full productions in the theater in front of a small number of loyal subscribers,” said said producing artistic director Mark S. Hoebee, in a press release.
The season will begin with livestreamed concerts, not performed at the theater, featuring Patti LuPone, Laura Benanti and Vanessa Williams. A cabaret-style holiday show mounted at the theater, “Sing in a New Year!,” will be available for subscribers Dec. 19-Jan. 2, as will “Some Enchanted Evening: The Songs of Rodgers & Hammerstein,” Feb. 13-27.
The musicals “Pete ’n’ Keely” and “Beehive: The ’60s Musical” will take place later, on dates TBA. The hope is that these two shows will be able to accommodate live audiences; if not, they will be produced at the theater and streamed for subscribers, like “Sing in a New Year!” and “Some Enchanted Evening.”
