The Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University in New Brunswick has several works by sculptor George Segal on display. And, through July 31, it will also host an exhibition titled “George Segal in Black and White: Photographs by Donald Lokuta.”
Lokuta, a professor at Kean University, has nearly 15,000 negatives of Segal and Segal’s work, taken at Segal’s South Brunswick studio between 1984 and 2000 (when Segal died).
Through May 16, the exhibition will focus on images of Segal, and of the studio itself. Part two, on view from May 23 through July 31, will be devoted to Segal at work.
Lokuta says, in the exhibition’s catalogue: “I want these photographs to take the viewer back to the creative moments … (they) are not orchestrated or commissioned works … (they) are a record of a personal journey, an adventure in art and creativity.”
Segal earned an M.F.A. from Rutgers in 1963, and was given an honorary doctorate in 1970.
The museum’s hours are Tuesdays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. Also, the museum will offer a curator-led tour of the exhibition, March 3 at 6 p.m., when it stays open until 9 p.m. for “Art After Hours,” which takes place on the first Tuesday of every month.
The museum is located at 71 Hamilton St., and there is no admission charge; visit zimmerlimuseum.rutgers.edu.
